SOCIETY OF BIOLOGYExplore Biology
This website covers a wide range of options available for secondary school pupils and university students wanting to find out more about a career in biology. You may enjoy studying biology and want to learn more about it, or you could be planning for a future career within biology or even a mixture of the two. Either way there are many resources available to help you enjoy biology and succeed in it as a career.
BIOCHEMICAL SOCIETYAdvancing Molecular Bioscience
The Biochemical Society promotes the advancement of the Molecular Biosciences, representing the interests of all those working in the sector. The Society recognises that the discipline of “Biochemistry” now encompasses the entire breadth of Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences and this is reflected in the range of its activities and its strapline – “Advancing Molecular Biosciences”. It also believes that it is part of a Bioscience community with a proliferation of learned societies with whom it works to foster a community of Bioscientists, thereby delivering its mission more effectively.
BRITISH ECOLOGICAL SOCIETYAdvancing ecology and making it count
The vision of the British Ecological Society is to advance ecology and make it count. Ecology is the scientific study of the distribution, abundance and dynamics of organisms, their interactions with other organisms and with their physical environment. At a time when finite natural resources are being used at increasing rates, it has never been more important for human society to understand its impact on ecological systems and their importance in maintaining human health.
BRITISH PHARMACOLOGICAL SOCIETYCareers in Pharmacology
Do you want to discover something new about the body or help to discover a new medicine? Much of the research to understand how the body works and how medicines act has been conducted in Universities and research institutes, many funded by medical charities. For example, Professor John Vane, who worked at the Royal College of Surgeons laboratories in London, received the Nobel Prize for discovering that aspirin stops pain and reduces fever by inhibiting a specific enzyme. Often Universities and research institutes work in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies. The former do the fundamental research and the latter apply that knowledge to development of new medicines.
INSTITUTE OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCEThe science supporting healthcare
Biomedical scientists work in healthcare to diagnose disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment through the analysis of fluids and tissue samples from patients. Providing the ‘engine room’ of modern medicine with 70% of diagnoses based on the pathology results provided by laboratory services. With biomedical scientists handling an estimated 150 million samples in the UK, every person at some point in their lives will have benefited from its services.
SOCIETY OF BIOLOGYA single unified voice for biology
The Society of Biology’s vision is to represent all who are committed to biology in academia, industry, education and research; to facilitate the promotion and translation of advances in biological science for national and international benefit, and to engage and encourage public interest in the life sciences.
SOCIETY OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGYAiming to promote Experimental Biology within the scientific community
The Society for Experimental Biology believes that the broad nature and lack of “ology” boundaries implicit in Experimental Biology give it a pivotal role in the development of Life Sciences which are of considerable benefit to its members and to society. In particular, Experimental Biology contributes to knowledge that can be applied to the development of agriculture and medicine and to understanding the impacts of human activity on living organisms and ecosystems.
SOCIETY OF GENERAL MICROBIOLOGYPromoting modern microbial science
Society for General Microbiology (SGM) is a leading international membership organization. It promotes all aspects of modern microbial science. Key activities include publishing journals and organizing scientific conferences. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in microbiology.
SOUTHAMPTON OCEANOGRAPHY CENTREDiscovering the unknown
NOCS is the national focus for oceanography in the UK with a remit to achieve scientific excellence in its own right as one of the world’s top five oceanographic research institutions. NOCS delivers a diverse mission, which ranges from managing the national research vessel fleet and other major facilities, to programmes of strategic research for NERC, and academic research and education in ocean and earth sciences in support of the University’s mission.
THE BIOLOGY FACULTYShort films of university lecturers speaking on topics taken from the A-level curriculum
The Biology Faculty provides free, short films of university lecturers speaking on topics directly from the A-level curriculum. All our topics are provided by the major exam boards: AQA, Edexcel and OCR. In bringing the expertise of research scholars into the classroom, we stretch and challenge students, help them excel in their assessments, inspire deeper learning and smooth the transition from school to university. The site also helps students choose a university Biology department that’s right for them and shows them what careers may follow their studies and what employers particularly value in Biology graduates.
