Source: e-Skills UK The latest Technology Insights research report from e-skills UK, launched today, reveals that IT employment through to 2020 is forecast to grow at almost twice the UK average. A record 129,000 new recruits a year are needed to fill IT & Telecoms jobs in the UK, both brand new jobs and to replace those leaving the sector. The highest levels of employment growth are in high skill areas like software professionals, ICT managers, and IT strategy and planning professionals.
Looking for an apprenticeship after school? This presentation from our recent workshop goes through the process, what to do, when and how to find a vacancy. Remember to ask for your careers appointment after half term!
Following the success of last year’s Kirklees Apprenticeship Event, it has been decided to hold one in National Apprenticeship Week for young people in years 11, 12 and 13 (and their parents) to come and find out about what apprenticeship opportunities may be available to them. The number and range of apprenticeships has increased over the past few years, with over 1500 16 to 18 year olds in Kirklees starting an apprenticeship in 2011-12.
We have now added a link to UCAS PROGRESS to our links on Thinkfutures (find it under Learning/ Further Education/ Local providers). This is the online search and application system year 11 students will be using for their further education applications.
Universities are scrapping traditional interviews over concerns that they favour applicants from middle class families and independent schools. The move follows claims that the usual format, where candidates are questioned by a panel of academics, could give an advantage to confident and articulate pupils who have been coached in how to respond. Instead, interviews are being replaced by a “speed dating” style process where each candidate undergoes a series of brief one-on-one “mini-interviews”, solving problems and taking part in roleplays rather than answering general questions about themselves. The new assessments are seen as fairer because they reward innate skills, such as empathy, rather than eloquence. It comes as universities face increasing pressure from the Government to broaden their intake and admit more students from poorer families and state schools. Sixth formers applying this month to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science at at least five institutions around the UK will undergo the new speed dating style assessments.
In the first of our series of career seminars, we welcomed Emma Ward from Phillips Hair Academy to talk to a group of year 10 and 11 students, who have expressed an interest in this sector. Emma talked about the realities, routes and progression opportunities in a career in Health and Beauty. She gave students an insight into the exciting opportunities The Phillips Hair Academy can offer new apprentices, the recruitment process and offered practical advice on how our students could achieve their goals.
What kind of skills are today’s employers looking for? Contrary to what you may think, having high-powered technical skills or an advanced and specialized education are not all it takes to land a good job in today’s job market. Recent articles show what employers look for in a new-hire.
Dealing with disappointing A level results is stressful for both students and careers advisors, but bestCourse4me.com, with its unique data on successful university applications, is your secret weapon. What these students need is advice based on hard data. They need to know which universities have accepted lower A level grades for their courses, or, if they are thinking about changing their course and have to start from scratch, then they need to know which are the likely courses that they can get onto based on their lower than expected results.
For some families, the decision of a son or daughter to study medicine is hardly a surprise, for there is a family tradition of working in medicine. For other families it can come as a big surprise – and a worry about whether the student really will find this field of work to be as they imagine it.
