Following the success of last year’s Kirklees Apprenticeship Event, it has been decided to hold one in National Apprenticeship Week for young people in years 11, 12 and 13 (and their parents) to come and find out about what apprenticeship opportunities may be available to them. The number and range of apprenticeships has increased over the past few years, with over 1500 16 to 18 year olds in Kirklees starting an apprenticeship in 2011-12.
We have now added a link to UCAS PROGRESS to our links on Thinkfutures (find it under Learning/ Further Education/ Local providers). This is the online search and application system year 11 students will be using for their further education applications.
In the first of our series of career seminars, we welcomed Emma Ward from Phillips Hair Academy to talk to a group of year 10 and 11 students, who have expressed an interest in this sector. Emma talked about the realities, routes and progression opportunities in a career in Health and Beauty. She gave students an insight into the exciting opportunities The Phillips Hair Academy can offer new apprentices, the recruitment process and offered practical advice on how our students could achieve their goals.

The Social Mobility Foundation is coordinating two exciting residential programmes in August aimed at high-achieving Year 12 students. They are: 1. J.P. Morgan Programme, 12th-25th August 2012: 50 places available 2. Whitehall Social Mobility Internship Programme, 13th-24th August 2012: 60 places available The Social Mobility Foundation is a charity which aims to support high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds into the top universities and professions. In the last 5 years, 53% of the students we have worked with have gone onto the full range of Russell Group universities, the rest going to other excellent universities. The residential programmes are aimed at Year 12 students who are predicted to achieve at least ABB at A-Level, have at least 5 A grades at GCSE and have been eligible for Free School Meals. We will also accept students who attend/attended a school/college with a higher than average percentage of students known to be eligible for Free School Meals* who will also be the first generation in their family to attend university in the UK.

Remit have been busy visiting schools all around the country running sessions about the apprenticeships they have to offer. Unfortunately they will be unable to visit every single school however they do not want these students to miss out on a great opportunity. Therefore they are sending out application forms and video links of some of the apprenticeships (motor industry) they offer to those students who are interested.
Recent studies show that students who can recall meetings with employers during their school life are less likely to be NEET (Not in Education, employment or training). At MFG, our goal is to develop employable youngsters, by giving them the best academic and pastoral opportunities, supported by high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance.
